"Overman"
by Sara Rodrigues

Roxanna Albayati (cello)
Sara Rodrigues (voice and electronics)

Above the clouds within the machine two children converse.
Elevated in space, the spectral substance of the cello surpasses its humane qualities whilst the drone predominates.

‘I love how we’re just passing a giant ocean’
‘we’re very close…’

‘what is this? What is it?’

The piece develops through a flight, with two children commenting on what they see from above. As the cello develops the journey, the player’s voice instructs the journey throughout, enwrapped with the machine drone of the airplane that becomes predominantly present, able to take us above humanity, above the humanly possible. The sounds of the acoustic cello are slowly submerged by the pedals that distort its sound, aided by the use of extended techniques. The spectralist approach brings a closer awareness of sound itself, enhanced with mechanisms outside the acoustic score, elevating its timbre to the quality of noise that comes closer to that of the constant engine.
